There are cities that always resonate with people; Rome, Paris, New York…for me I tend to forget about one of the best cities…London! Offering fantastic food and world-class museums. Family friendly excursions, think Harry Potter attractions, entertainment and shopping! The weather might not always cooperate but that’s what an umbrella is for.
Meeting an old friend and having less than twenty-four hours in London may sound exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. Prioritization needs to be your best friend for the day. Starting with a doppio espresso, my choice Costa Coffee, tell yourself “jet-lag cure” and continue on. You can easily meander through parks, affluent districts and quirky shopping areas!
However, my priority that day was The Shard, promising eye-catching views over all of London and a champagne bar on top. Time to navigate the Tube. Often I feel as if I’m a fish out of water slowly, carefully planning my journey, only in reality trying to avoid clusters of people who actually know where they are going and how they will get there. Yes I’m riding the Tube at rush hour!
Upon arriving at The Shard and much to our disappointment we encountered a private party going on and were ushered away from the entrance and informed it was closed for the day. What NO! Moving on as there was no time to wallow, we walked to the nearby Shangri-La Hotel. Offer your name to the concierge in the lobby and they will allocate a table for you in the bar on the fifty-second floor where you can spy close to the same fantastic views over London. Yes the glass of Veuve Clicquot is 19 pounds, however, you did not pay the 25 pounds for entrance into The Shard, now savor the moment!
Now back on the Tube to the Westminster stop in order to view Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye. All of which I have seen before but much like the Eiffel Tower, somethings never get old.
All too soon time is winding down and dinner plans are being made. Back towards the neighborhood of Kensington there are numerous restaurants. We decided on Thai for the evening. Churchill Arms is a famous pub in Kensington, once frequented by Winston Churchill’s grandparents!
Since you are already riding the Tube in London take a trip to Kings Cross station even if it is a little out of your way. Search out Platform 9-3/4, just ask, anyone will be able to direct you. Let yourself be transported as if you have just finished reading the first Harry Potter book. Fun for all, take as many pictures as you like and if you didn’t get the perfect shot plenty of staff is there to assist you. Then browse the shop next door for all your Harry Potter merchandise and possibly the perfect picture!
